Sickle cell: bone marrow transplants offer hope

Sickle cell anaemia is the most common inherited blood disorder in the UK, affecting 15,000 people – mostly among those with African or Caribbean backgrounds. Bone marrow transplants from a related donor offer hope to some patients of a cure and medical advances have made it a safer procedure. But while children can have the operation under the NHS, adults cannot.
