Smoke from rooftop fire visible across central London

Plumes of smoke are visible across central London after a fire broke out at an address in the Strand where a hotel and several flats are under refurbishment.

Seventy-five firefighters and 10 fire engines were called to tackle flames in a building in central London on Tuesday morning.

The London Fire Brigade says part of the roof is alight at an address on The Strand, where a 10-storey hotel and flats are under refurbishment.

A fire brigade spokesman said the fire had taken hold of about a quarter of the 100 square metre roof. The LFB were called to the scene at around 11am.

Plumes of black smoke were visible across the capital from late this morning.

London Ambulance said it was on standby at the scene but it had not treated anyone. There are no reports of people being trapped or injured.

The Strand, which runs between Trafalgar Square and Fleet Street, includes Charing Cross railway station, Somerset House, the Royal Courts of Justice and several West End theatres.

Channel 4 News producer Marcus Edwards has been tweeting from the scene and sends this photograph of the fire.
