Social housing shortage: ‘When I’m 65, if I’m still renting, I can’t retire.’

With an estimated 1.3 million people on the waiting list for social housing in England, charities have called on all political parties to make the issue  a priority for the next government.

The charity Shelter says 90,000 social homes must be built every year to end what it calls the ‘housing emergency.’

Research shared with this programme shows families are struggling to afford to stay in their local area because of spiralling private rental costs.
