South Africa gold mine: Thousands of volunteers help to free trapped miners

Thousands of volunteers have turned up outside an abandoned South African gold mine to help rescue thousands of miners feared to be trapped deep underground.

Supplies of food and medicine were cut off by the authorities months ago, then the entrance shaft was sealed up, as officials called the illegal miners criminals who should be “smoked out”.
