Surviving war: A day in the life of one of Gaza’s 20,000 new orphans

The images we’ve seen from Gaza over the last year have been shocking and violent. Homes destroyed, bodies broken and hospitals overwhelmed in the face of Israel’s assault.

But amid the chaos and the ruins, a distorted form of day-to-day life continues – one in which the search for food and water takes up an entire day, and orphaned children care for their siblings.

Gazan filmmaker Yousef Hammash has been documenting the story of 12-year-old Yazan – whose young life in Khan Younis has been turned utterly on its head since the war began. Here’s his special report.

This report was filmed by Ebraheem Abu Eshiba, produced by Thom Walker and edited by John Moratiel.
