Syria earthquake: Devastated rebel-held areas in urgent need of aid

International Editor

In Syria, the area hardest hit by the earthquake is the northwest region, which is predominantly under rebel control and in desperate need of aid.

The UN says more than five million people are believed to be homeless there, and is calling for greater access.

The region has received little help as the Syrian government has not allowed aid to cross the front line, and permits just one border crossing at Bab Al Hawa linking the region with Turkey in the north.
