Syrian rebels reach city of Aleppo eight years after being driven out

Syrian rebel forces have reached the city of Aleppo, clashing with Government forces on the outskirts.

It’s the first time opposition fighters have got as far as the city since Syrian troops, backed by Russia and Iran, took control eight years ago.

Thousands of insurgents began advancing through the northwestern region three days ago, seizing a number of towns and villages on the way.
