Team GB athletes receive heroes’ homecoming

Carnivals and parties are happening across the UK as more Olympians return home after one of Team GB’s best medal hauls in the Olympic Games’ modern era.

In Weymouth, Team GB’s sailors appeared in an open-topped bus to thank locals for the support they had received during the sailing competitions held in the sea off the Dorset town.

They included two goat kids called Ainslie and Ben, who were named after the four times gold medal winning Olympian Ben Ainslie.

In total, the sailing team won one gold and four silvers at London 2012.

Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire town of Otley, locals turned out in the rain to welcome home Lizzie Armitstead, the winner of Team GB’s first medal, a silver in the cycling road race.

Her open-topped bus was escorted through the town by a convoy of local cyclists.

Armitstead told local people that she had found their support during the Olympics to be “inspiring”.
