Thaksin Shinawatra jailed after return to Thailand from exile

The former prime minister of Thailand has been jailed – after he returned to the country following fifteen years in exile.

Thaksin Shinawatra was ousted by the army – but now that his party has got back into power thanks to a coalition deal with pro-military groups – he’s now likely to seek a royal pardon.

The deal was designed to keep out a progressive party who wanted to curb the power of Thailand’s monarchy.
