Iraq’s second city is both symbolically and financially crucial for the Islamic State group as much of their income comes in taxes they impose there. Last month US-backed Iraqi forces took control of the city’s east. Today’s gains signal a breakthrough in their battle for the western half, as Diana Magnay reports.
