The Venezuelan family struggling to put food on table as military accused of blocking aid

Inflation is running at an estimated one million per cent, US sanctions are beginning to bite, more than half the population say they can’t afford to buy food.

And now Venezuelan troops are accused of blocking an attempt by opposition leader Juan Guaido to bring humanitarian aid into the country, after President Maduro dismissed it as a US invasion stunt.

Tonight the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared “the Maduro regime must let the aid reach the starving people”.

We speak to Temir Porras, who was chief of staff to Nicolas Maduro until 2013 and is now an academic.
