Thousands evacuated as wildfires spread in France

Around 12,000 people on the south-east coast of France have had to abandon their homes and hotels to escape wildfires. The alarm was raised in the middle of last night, and many holidaymakers and locals were forced to sleep on the beach. Wildfires are also raging in parts of southern Italy, Portugal and Albania, fanned by strong winds and drought.
