Thankfully, each of the bank holiday weekends so far this year have come up trumps for most of us, but the final one of the year is going to be tricky to get right.
Whilst it’s not unusual to have occasional spells of turbulent weather in the summer months, this weekend will stand out more given the sunshine and heat we’ve been used to.
After July delivering the most prolonged spell of summer heat the UK has seen in 16 years, the first week of August has brought something much closer to normal.
Yesterday, the hottest day of the year so far was recorded, with the temperature reaching 34.1C at Heathrow airport in London.
At the end of this week, the jet stream will briefly push northwards again, which will drag a plume of heat and humidity across us from Iberia.
As July draws to a close in a week’s time, I thought I’d take a look ahead at what the start of August will offer – especially as school summer holidays are now underway.
Following our longest hot spell since July 2006, temperatures are going to gradually return to where they should be at this time of year, accompanied by some intense thunderstorms.

Following a brief spell of unsettled weather earlier this week, high pressure is going to build across the UK today and stay over us for quite some time – a week and possibly longer.
It’s been a long time coming, but it may finally be about to happen. Summer sunshine is coming later this week and could stay with us for a while.
The weather this weekend across the UK really isn’t going to conjure up a sense of summer, with wind and rain expected. But it looks promising for Glastonbury and Wimbledon next week.
A plume of heat and humidity is going to brush England and Wales towards the middle of this week, bringing the potential for parts of south east England to reach 30C.
