A bitterly divided US Senate has narrowly voted to push ahead with a vote this weekend on whether to appoint Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. But tonight there was a blow for his critics as one wavering senator said he would vote to confirm the judge “unless something big happens”.
