UK redundancies hit record high as jobless rate rises again

Economics Correspondent

The number of people in the UK who’ve been laid off has soared to a record high.

Redundancies in the three months to October rose to 370,000, while there are now more than 800,000 fewer workers on company payrolls than before the pandemic struck.

A third of those job losses were in hospitality, a sector alongside retail that traditionally provides opportunities for younger workers.
