After six torrid days, Heathrow started to clear the backlog of flights in earnest on Thursday – promising that “most flights will operate today”.

Eurostar led the rail misery earlier this week, with passengers facing queues of more than five hours at King’s Cross. The cross Channel rail link now claims to be operating a near-normal service, but advises passengers only to come to the station if they hold a valid ticket. The Highways Agency is suspending 64 miles of roadworks on motorways and A-roads to help people get home without further delays over the Christmas period.

The sea ports have remained largely unaffected throughout the bad weather, and have space available for foot passengers. Dover says it is running to schedule, the port is open until 7pm on Christmas Eve and re-opens at 6.30am on Boxing Day. For more information see the Port of Dover’s website.
