The internet unceremoniously hijacks Ukip’s trend in the final hours of the European elections, as the party attempts to bolster its support.
In an attempt to bolster support in the final hours of the European elections, the social marketing gurus at Ukip’s headquarters have come up with the hashtag #WhyImVotingUkip.
Nigel Farage praised tweeters for using the hashtag, making it one of the most popular trends today.
Delighted to see so many people announcing their intention to vote for UKIP tomorrow #WhyImVotingUKIP
— Nigel Farage (@Nigel_Farage) May 21, 2014
On closer inspection, however, it appears a large number of non-Ukip supporters also jumped on the bandwagon, voicing their sarcasm in for voting for the party.
It does appear that the hashtag was originally intended to promote the party, with those posting early seeming to keep with a more serious tone.

No borders. No control. #WhyImVotingUkip

But it rapidly descended into farce and, a day before the European and local elections, the Twitter trend has spectacularly backfired on the party.
It seemed to be a repeat of yesterday’s ill-fated Ukip carnival.
