‘Ukraine has the right to defend itself…that includes striking on Russian soil’, says German ambassador to UK

Germany has supported Ukraine from the beginning of the war despite its industries relying heavily on cheap Russian gas.

Chancellor Scholz famously declared a Zeitenwende, a historic transformation of its commitment to help Ukraine with arms and cash.

At the same time, Berlin has been particularly concerned about goading Russia into a wider war.

We spoke to the German ambassador to the UK Miguel Berger, and started by asking whether his government thinks Vladimir Putin was bluffing when he said Nato risks igniting war with Russia.
