UK’s first local lockdown imposed in Leicester after virus spike

As the rest of England prepares to go back to pubs and restaurants this weekend, in Leicester the doors will remain closed.

The city today has become the first to enter a local lockdown.

All non-essential shops are closing or closed, Residents are being advised to stay home and only make essential journeys.

The Prime Minister thanked the people of Leicester in a tweet for their forbearance in taking the measures needed to control the virus.
