University campus tensions fuelled by chaplain’s IDF call up

University chaplains are supposed to provide pastoral support for students of all faiths and none. So when a Jewish chaplain in Leeds, was called up as a reservist and returned to Israel to serve with the army after October 7th, it led to mass protests and even threats to his safety.

Rabbi Zecharia Deutsch’s service was perfectly legal, but it raised ethical questions. And the row reflects the wider debate here in the UK since the Hamas attacks.
