Jon Snow reports from Detroit on a unique story of invention, creation and bust – and talks to those championing a city that was once one of America’s beating manufacturing heartlands.
Detroit: invention, creation and bust
This place died in the 50s as a car maker. It struggled on with small industries within and finally disintegrated in the 90s. But look at the inspiring skyline of the city of Detroit itself – it’s a unique story of invention, creation and bust. Jon Snow talks to Martha Reeves, who came to fame with her backing group, the Vandellas, recording such Motown hits as “Jimmy Mack” and “Dancing in the Street”. She has also dabbled in poilitics, for several years serving as a council woman in Detroit.
