Venezuela: Edmundo González goes into exile in Spain after arrest warrant

The former diplomat widely considered to be the legitimate winner of Venezuela’s presidential election has left the country.

Edmundo González flew to Spain, which has given him asylum. It comes days after the government ordered his arrest over the opposition publishing its own tallies of the election results.

The EU’s foreign affairs chief described it as “a sad day for democracy in Venezuela”.
