Water bills will increase again to clean up UK waterways

Household water bills in England and Wales are to go up by more than a third over the next five years.

The rises announced by the regulator Ofwat are significantly higher than expected.

It says it will mean billions can be spent on cleaning up rivers and stopping sewage spills.

But environmental and consumer campaigners have reacted furiously, with some calling it the nightmare before Christmas.
