Wearing a face covering will become compulsory on public transport in England from 15 June – the date when more lockdown restrictions are due to be eased.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said as more people go back to work and non-essential shops start opening, face coverings would help protect fellow passengers – and fines could be imposed for anyone failing to comply.
In Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon said she was considering making face coverings mandatory on transport and in shops.
