Yesterday, opposition leader Juan Guaido declared himself acting president – with the backing of the US, Canada and neighbours Brazil and Colombia.

But today the country’s military came out in support of the embattled sitting president, Nicholas Maduro.

He has thanked Russia for its support and attacking the US for wanting to install his rival, who he called “a puppet President”.
