It’s the first day of China’s Lunar new year holiday – traditionally a day when people make up to 2 billion trips across the country to visit their home towns.

But this year it’s all happening in the shadow of soaring Covid cases – that’s leaving hospitals overwhelmed, and medical supplies fast running out – as well unrest that, in some places, has begun to boil over.
