Two women held on suspicion of terror offences

Two women aged 26 and 27 are arrested at Heathrow airport on suspicion of terrorism offences.

Officers from the Met’s counter terrorism command stopped a 26-year-old woman at Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport, under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 as she was preparing to embark on a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

She was subsequently arrested on suspicion of being involved in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism. She is currently in police custody.

A large quantity of cash was also seized.

‘No immediate threat’

Later, a second woman, aged 27, was also arrested at an address in north-west London. She has been taken to a London police station where she remains in custody.

Both arrests were intelligence led and not in response to any immediate threat or risk.

Detectives are currently searching two addresses in north and north-west London under Terrorism Act.

Inquiries are at an early stage and we are unable to give further detail at present.

Both women are British citizens and are not part of the same family.
