Late on Thursday night, police were standing guard outside the home of the 22-year-old man thought to have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a soldier in Woolwich.
A neighbour said the man – she named him as Michael – was a university student who lives at the flat in Greenwich.
The woman, who would not give her name, told Channel 4 News: “I know the family. I think Michael is a student at Greenwich University. I haven’t seen him there for about three months. I don’t know where he’s been.”
Another neighbour, a man, said: “I saw police through the window (on Wednesday night), at about 11pm. I saw two coppers standing outside the flat with machine guns. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I don’t really know the family who live there but it seems the man living there has been arrested.”

Another woman, who lives on a different floor, said: “The young man is a student at Greenwich University but I don’t really know him, he keeps himself to himself.”
When the woman was shown a photograph of the two suspects filmed on a mobile phone video moments after the murder of the soldier in Woolwich on Wednesday, she pointed at the man wearing a brown jacket and said: “That’s the man who lives there.”
She said the other suspect in the video, the man wearing a black hat who talked directly to the camera while holding weapons in his blood-soaked hand, was a friend of “Michael” who she had seen several times at the flats with him.
