You love Bjork, your favourite dish is halva and you’re most likely to shop in Hobbs: meet the typical Channel 4 News viewer, according to the new YouGov profile.
It is every marketer’s dream and it turns out the punters like it to, if social media buzz is anything to go by.
YouGov’s new interactive profiles website connects data from over 200,000 YouGov members in the UK. Type in any search term – be it a brand, person or thing – and the site will bring up the average profile from their data set.
The site has shown how Apple customers love grilled halloumi and are more likely to be right wing than very left-wing Android owners, who apparently prefer roast pigeon. Those who like macaroni and cheese are more right-wing, while kale-eaters are more likely to be female and left-wing.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the sample size varies for certain persona. The findings throw up some surprising results that should probably be taken with a pinch of salt. But that didn’t stop us searching for the typical Channel 4 News viewer (see above).
The headline demographics overlap with the average lovers of all news, regardless of where it comes from: male, over 60, and with a high disposable income of over £1,000 a month.
But for Channel 4 News specifically, viewers veer slightly to the left of the political spectrum and are more likely to work in the civil service.
Their favourite food is on the niche end of just plain weird – the middle eastern delicacy halva, followed by pizza rustica – while they are most likely to have a dog as a pet. Perhaps our presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy is setting an example?

Thankfully, when it comes to the online behaviour of our audience, the @channel4news Twitter and Facebook accounts are right up at the top of our viewers’ lists.
When it comes to the top websites, things get a little stranger. Classicfm.com is one of our viewers’ most visited websites, following by Jamie Oliver’s “cooking skills” site and openingtimes.co.uk.
One of the most intriguing parts of the YouGov persona is the “personality” section. The designers picked out a selection of quotes that respondents agree with, and three of our most prominent quotes relate to advertising – or hatred of it. For example: “I feel bombarded by advertising”.
Our viewers are also a sensitive bunch, describing themselves as analytical and principled – and on occasion, “gloomy”. Maybe it’s all the watching live music that they’re doing – that is the most popular hobby, along with walking and visiting museums and galleries.
Our viewers appear to be loyal as well, with anchors Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy topping their list of favourite celebrities.
Favourite musicians include Bjork, Saint Etienne and David Byrne, while favourite films have a more retro feel, and include the Pink Panther and Milk.
