The Queen’s granddaughter and her rugby playing husband (pictured above, at Wimbledon on Sunday), have said that they are expecting their first baby in the new year.

Buckingham Palace said in short statement: “Mr and Mrs Mike Tindall are very pleased to announce that Zara Tindall is expecting a baby in the new year.

“The Princess Royal and Captain Mark Phillips, Mr Phillip and Mrs Linda Tindall, and members of both families are delighted with the news.

“This baby will be the first child for Mike and Zara and the third grandchild for the Princess Royal.”

The child will follow that of Prince William and Kate, which is expected in the coming days.

Zara Phillips, who won a team silver medal at last year’s London 2012 Olympic Games, is 14th in line to the throne. She married Tindall, a former England rugby captain who plays for Gloucester, two years ago.
