Zimbabwe President returns amid violent crackdown

International Editor

If you thought Zimbabwe’s descent ended with the removal of Robert Mugabe from power, think again.

The new Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has had to return from a foreshortened foreign trip and promised to end violent protests over price rises and an even more violent crackdown by his government on the opposition.

Mnangagwa also said “heads will roll” if he finds wrongdoing by security forces who have been accused of torture and deadly brutality. Human rights groups say at least a dozen people have been killed in the violence which started earlier this month.
