Alhan Gençay Traverses the Fine Lands of Britain to Find Out if ‘It’s Alright To Be White’ in new Channel 4 digital series
Category: News ReleasePresenter and entrepreneur, Alhan Gençay is on a mission to discover the curious ways of some very British activities, as he immerses himself into worlds that are very different from his own culture, race and background. He meets - what he thinks - are some of the ‘whitest tribes’ of Britain to celebrate, question and try to understand their past times. In It’s Alright to Be White, a new Channel 4 digital series, Gençay applies his warm, quick witted humour and anarchic style as he meets native peoples across this green and pleasant land. He charms, confuses and ultimately teases out fresh truths and a new thoughtful lens on well-established beliefs and ways of being.
Produced by Flying Shoe Films and Ultra Haze and co-created by Alhan Gençay and Heydon Prowse, this five-part Factual Entertainment series will see Alhan joined along the way by well-known friends, Big Narstie, Lethal B, Harry Pinero, Nella Rose and Very Vee Brown, as they traverse the spoils of Clacton on Sea and its local darts team, travel to Wiltshire to meet some pagans, to Westminster to get under the skin of the Bullingdon Club to find out if the people of Staffordshire love their dogs more than family, and Alhan joins Extinction Rebellion to explore their “hippy ways” and extreme approach to climate change protests.
Evie Buckley, Digital Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 said: “I’m really happy to be working with the team at Ultra Haze and Flying Shoe Films on this humorous, yet eye opening show, that will cast unique lens on all the facets of British culture through the eyes of Alhan and his companions. I look forward to seeing what Alhan discovers…”
Sacha Khari, Head of Digital Commissioning said: “It’s Alright to Be White really is an exciting commission that we’re proud to be developing as part of our Digital Original output and strategy. These five episodes brightly stand for everything that Channel 4 is about when it comes to representing the whole of the UK and hearing different viewpoints and unheard voices authentically from people across the nation.”
Heydon Prowse, Executive Producer at Flying Shoe Films said: “Channel 4 is the natural home for punchy satire in the UK, so I’m so excited that it’s staking its rightful claim as the leader in audacious, ballsy comedy with a show like this. It's a joy to be back making this type of rowdy content with a natural comedy talent like Alhan. Alhan is the face of satire for a whole new generation. He is the cheekiest boy I've ever met and he is armed with a razor-sharp wit."
It’s Alright to be White is produced by Ultra Haze and Flying Shoe Films and Exec Produced by Heydon Prowse and Andy Brown. The Directors were Ryan Samuda and Evlyn Liu and the Editors were Elishama Udorok and Francis Morgan-Giles. It was co-commissioned by Channel 4 Digital Commissioning Editor, Evie Buckley and Head of Digital Commissioning, Sacha Khari.
