  • The online game used to source contestants for The Bank Job, a week-long live TV event airing on Channel 4 from January 2nd, has now been played over 2 million times since launching early this month.

The incredible success of the game, in which players enter a digital bank vault and compete against each other to open safety deposit boxes by answering general knowledge questions, has exceeded all expectations by the channel and the show's producers, Remarkable Television (an Endemol company).

The game has been played by over 110,000 people across the UK, who are striving to unlock an application form and take part in the live TV show, which will be filmed in a real bank vault and hosted by George Lamb. Airing for six nights on Channel 4 from January 2nd, the show gives players the chance to pull off the ultimate heist and walk away with a life-changing sum of money.

The online game has attracted some hugely determined potential contestants, with one female player in Scotland notching up over 500 games in just one week.  At an average of three minutes per game, she has played for 26 hours over a seven day period.

In the battle of the sexes, men account for 61% of all players at the moment. Players under 24 are the most prolific followed by the over 30's. Currently players in the North West and the South East are the strongest with the highest number of players qualifying for Elite Player status. Wales and Northern Ireland are bringing up the rear as the weakest regions.

The show airs on Channel 4 for six nights from January 2nd.

    Notes to Editors:

    • The Bank Job is produced by Remarkable Television, an Endemol company. The Executive Producers are David Flynn and Tom Blakeson and the Series Producer is James Fox. The Bank Job was commissioned for Channel 4 by Commissioning Editor Madeleine Knight and Justin Gorman with the online game commissioned by Jody Smith.
    • The online head-to-head game was built by Chunk Games. The Play Along game has been in developed by Monterosa. Both online games have been developed in association with Endemol for Channel 4.
    • The online game is available to play any time but players must win two games during an online tournament to become an Elite Player which will allow them the chance to unlock the application form and enter a prize draw to win £10,000. Tournaments take place at various times during the day - to find out when players must follow The Bank Job Facebook and Twitter. The online tournaments will run during the early episodes of the live TV shows so players could find themselves competing for real, live on Channel 4, just days later.
    • As players compete online they will build a personal profile which reflects their game play performance and their player type. Individual game performances and personal profiles can then be shared with friends via Facebook. In the live shows, viewers will be able to Play Along with the contestants in the real vault, competing to beat the best player on the show. Online players will also be able to compete against their Facebook friends using Facebook Connect.
