C4's BAFTA-winning team to broadcast Sainsbury's IPC Grand Prix Final

Category: News Release

Nine months after those unforgettable London 2012 Paralympic Games, world class track and field athletics returns to Channel 4.

Four Great British heroes from London 2012 - David Weir, Jonnie Peacock, Hannah Cockroft and Richard Whitehead return alongside a wealth of international athletes for the final of the new IPC Athletics Grand Prix series.

Live coverage begins at 1620 (BST) on Channel 4, presented by Jonathan Edwards and Ade Adepitan, complemented by an expert team of commentators, analysts and reporters with John Rawling, Rob Walker, Danny Crates and Sonja McLaughlan.

Over 140 athletes will compete across 18 disciplines. The world’s top six athletes are invited, after having competed in at least one IPC Athletics Grand Prix during the season, and are joined by twelve athletes invited by IPC Athletics to ensure a top class field in each event. For many in the competition it will be the last chance to test themselves ahead of the IPC World Championships in Lyon three weeks later.

Channel 4 Sports Editor Jamie Aitchison said: ‘Channel 4's BAFTA award-winning coverage of the 2012 Games brought Paralympic sport to a whole new audience in the UK and had a positive impact on attitudes towards disability sport. I'm delighted that we’re continuing the story this summer with live coverage of the Sainsbury’s IPC Grand Prix, the IPC World Athletics Championships in Lyon and Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games.’

Channel 4 will also broadcast the Sainsbury’s International Para Challenge, which takes place on the third day of the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium on 28 July, and will also have coverage from the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon.

Channel 4's ground-breaking coverage of the Paralympics, which reached almost 40 million people, has won two BAFTAs: for Best Sport and Live Event, and for Digital Creativity.

The coverage will be produced by Sunset+Vine, part of the BAFTA-award-winning production team behind Channel 4’s London 2012 Paralympics coverage. The producers are Gary Franses and Michael Cole and the coverage will be directed by Nick Turner.
