Camelot Synopsis

Category: News Release

Camelot begins in a land of turmoil - Briton during the Dark Ages. King Uther Pendragon (Sebastian Koch) is a capable and well-regarded King who rules a land that is constantly at war - defending borders and negotiating tenuous alliances with bloodthirsty warlords. Mysteriously poisoned in the midst of a party in his own castle, Uther is attended to at his death bed by the sorcerer Merlin (Joseph Fiennes). Merlin elicits from the King a royal order to appoint Uther's legitimate but publicly unknown son, Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), as the King's successor. At the hand of Merlin and for his own protection, Arthur was sent from birth to as the son of Uther's loyal subject, Ector (Sean Pertwee).

The royal order comes as a surprise to Arthur, who has no knowledge that the Ectors are not his birth parents. Stunned, Arthur accepts his destiny with his brother Kay (Peter Mooney) at his side. Along the journey to Camelot, Arthur and Kay are shocked at the level of violence and destruction that they encounter in the kingdom, which has descended into chaos following news of Uther's death. The magnitude of Arthur's sudden stature and the number of individuals eager to destroy him - abruptly and viciously - become all too apparent.

Paramount on Arthur's list of enemies is his own half-sister, Morgan (Eva Green), who, intending to claim her father's crown, installs herself in Castle Pendragon and forms an allegiance with a sworn enemy of Uther, King Lot (James Purefoy). The first encounter between the half-siblings is deeply tense, and Morgan storms away with threatening reprisals. Morgan embarks on a personal mission to destroy Arthur through her dark powers.

Will Arthur, this carefree boy summon the strength to unite all of Briton? Challenged each week - inside and outside the walls of Camelot - his only pervasive weakness remains the ethereal Guinevere (Tamsin Egerton), who is betrothed to one of Arthur's loyal champions, Leontes (Philip Winchester).

Episode 1 - Briton. The Dark Ages. A Land in Turmoil.

King Uther rules the land, but is constantly at war - defending borders, making allegiances. His daughter Morgan unexpectedly arrives at his castle on the night of an important banquet. He banished her once, 15 years ago, and now she is offering him forgiveness. He refuses it, and strikes her. That night, at the banquet, Morgan uses her necromantic powers to shapeshift into a scullery girl, giving her the chance to poison Uther. Merlin arrives too late to prevent the murder, and on his deathbed, Merlin tells Uther that Arthur, Uther's secret son who was brought up by the loyal Ector and his wife, must claim the throne. Uther agrees just before he dies.

Morgan installs herself in her father's castle, and forms an allegiance with a sworn enemy of Uther, King Lot. She intends to claim the crown for herself, but they receive word from Merlin to attend Arthur, Uther's son, at Camelot.

Merlin travels to the house of Ector and his wife, the couple to whom he entrusted Arthur as a baby. Arthur has no knowledge that Ector and his wife are not his true parents, and Merlin's news overwhelms him - he refuses to believe Merlin, but Ector confirms the truth. After discussing it with his brother Kay, he agrees to go and investigate what Merlin has told him. Arthur requests that Kay comes too - Ector agrees. On route to Camelot, Arthur, Merlin and Kay see the effects of all the war and bloodshed, and Arthur has to kill one of King Lot's men when he is ambushed.

Morgan meets Arthur at Camelot, but refuses to acknowledge him as a rightful heir, or even a true son of Uther. Merlin brings forth Igraine, Arthur's birth mother, who says she believes it is him. Morgan leaves, threatening reprisals. Merlin decides to invite all of the significant Kings to celebrate The Feast of the Pentecost at Camelot, to give them all a chance to swear their allegiance to Arthur, the true and rightful King, including those hostile to him.

The night before, Arthur has a dream of a woman on a beach, a woman to whom he makes love. He is woken because Merlin is ‘reading' his dream - he has his hands placed on Arthur's head, and can ‘see' what he is dreaming. Merlin demands to know who she is, but Arthur genuinely doesn't know. They are interrupted by Kay, who tells them the warlords are all arriving at Camelot. In the castle's Great Hall, all of the Kings are gathered. Morgan, who speaks for all the enemy warlords, tells Arthur and Merlin that to go any further would risk terrible consequences - to install Arthur as King would lead to civil war. If Arthur leaves now, he will go in peace, unharmed. King Lot goads Arthur - and Arthur takes the bait. He responds rudely and irrationally, the moment Lot has waited for.

Lot brings forth a body, the body of the man that Arthur killed. Lot tells him that this man was his son, and they know he is the killer. Arthur crumples, and apologises. To no avail - a woman is brought forward - Lady Ector. Before Arthur can get to her, Lot murders her. As Arthur and Kay are sobbing over her dead body, Lot tells Merlin they have five days to grieve and then they must be gone. If not, war.
