CHARACTER BIOGRAPHIES

Danny Whitwell (Played by Sam Heughan)

A motorbike-loving traffic cop with a picture-perfect wife and son, Danny appears to have a charmed life. He acts like the life and soul of the party but, deep down, he can’t help but be wracked by self-doubt. He feels unworthy of Becka, the wife he adores, and is terrified of losing her, which isn’t surprising, given the fact he’s carrying around a huge secret about his past and significant money worries. Life gets even more complicated when he meets Evie and realises that they have an electric, and undeniable, chemistry. Whilst Danny and Becka have a non-monogamous marriage, their rule is to never get involved with friends.

Evie Greenwood (Played by Eleanor Tomlinson)

Primary school teacher Evie has led a sheltered life. Growing up in an evangelical family in the Yorkshire Dales, Evie seized her first opportunity to get away from the church. Arriving at university, she fell straight into the arms of Pete, her first and only ever boyfriend and has been with him for seventeen years. After a devastating loss, Evie finds herself in a wild mood and more than ready to try new things, and Danny and Becka seem like just the people to help make that happen.

Becka Whitwell (Played by Jessica De Gouw)

A personal trainer and yoga influencer, with a large social media following, Becka was brought up by her hippy mother, who dragged her around the Australian gold coast. She’s trying her best to embrace suburban family life with husband Danny and ten-year-old son Olly but it’s definitely not what she imagined for her future self. Whilst Becka and Danny have a non-monogamous marriage, Becka can’t help but feel constrained by their strict rules and longs for the freedom and excitement of their early relationship.

Pete Thomas (Played by Alfie Enoch)

Partner to Evie, Pete likes to think of himself as more worldly than her. In reality, he’s actually more emotionally conservative than she is, and doesn’t cope at all well when he starts seeing a wilder, more adventurous side of his partner. A frustrated journalist on failing local newspaper ‘The Leeds Mercury’, Pete still harbours hopes of landing a career defining story along with his sidekick, junior reporter Sophie.

Alan Richardson (Played by Hugh Dennis)

Bookkeeper and nosey neighbour, Alan, spends his days alone in his upstairs office, surveying the neighbourhood through his telescope and indulging his obsession with his much younger neighbour, Becka. However, Alan is no harmless voyeur and his desire for Becka soon drives him to darker and darker behaviour.

Jean Richardson (Played by Kate Robbins)

Alan’s wife, Jean, has mobility issues and has had to abandon her marital bed to sleep downstairs. She’s hopeful that a stairlift might be the catalyst to reignite her marriage - getting her back upstairs, and back into bed with her husband. Little does she know that Alan’s attentions are now fully focused on the beautiful young woman across the street.

Gary Hudson (Played by Joel Morris)

Full of bravado, with a dodgy moral core, Gary is Danny’s close friend and fellow traffic cop. He likes nothing more than a bit of illegal moonlighting.

Sophie Foxton (Played by Ioanna Kimbook)

Pete’s colleague and a junior reporter at The Leeds Mercury. Sophie is younger and cooler than Pete, she loves ribbing Pete for being old and out of touch but also harbours a bit of a crush on him.

Lena (Played by Deirdre Mullins)

Lena is the fiercely protective mother of Danny’s secret, firstborn son, Ethan, who is deaf. Lena and Danny had a brief fling before Danny met Becka, when Lena was a witness in a case Danny was investigating. Lena has brought up Ethan alone but it’s been a struggle. When she and Ethan faced losing their home, Lena had to swallow her pride and get back in touch with Danny to ask for money. Danny is desperate to meet Ethan for the first time but isn’t yet ready to tell Becka about his secret son.

Gloria (Played by Janine Duvistki)

The most eccentric resident of Appleby Drive, Gloria knows everything that goes on in the neighbourhood. She’s always accompanied by her faithful dog, Mr Snuffles, who hates Alan with a vengeance.
