Ugh! Summers. They’re rubbish, with all their warm weather and outdoorsiness and sociability. Who needs them, right? You can stick your picnics, barbecues, pub gardens and trips to the park, all your tanned, lithe bodies and healthy, sun-kissed demeanours, right where the sun don’t shine. Ruddy sun, great cheerful ball of warmth and light. Yuk.

But don’t despair. Autumn and winter are just around the corner, with all their wind and rain and hail and darkness and bald trees and incessant, unrelenting gloom. Hurrah! It basically means you can get in a job lot of microwaveable dinners, industrial quantities of your favourite tipple, lock the door, unplug the phone, and get stuck in to some seriously good telly.
