Channel 4 to broadcast Superhumans Parade
Category: News ReleaseThe homecoming victory parade of British Paralympians and Olympians in Manchester will be broadcast live on Channel 4 on 17th October from 4pm-6.30pm.
Thousands are expected to line the streets in central Manchester to welcome home and celebrate the achievements of several hundred elite athletes from Olympic cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny to Paralympic Superhumans such as sprinter Jonnie Peacock and swimmer Ellie Simmonds. ParalympicsGB returned with 64 golds, and their total of 147 medals makes Rio their most successful games since Seoul 1988.
Channel 4 News presenter Jon Snow will anchor coverage from Manchester’s Albert Square. This is where the parade route finishes and will be the site of a grand-finale celebration event as Britain's Paralympic and Olympic heroes take to the stage. Jon will be joined in the studio by many of the Channel 4 Paralympic presenters including Sophie Morgan and Arthur Williams, whilst Iwan Thomas and Lee McKenzie will be interviewing the athletes on the floats as the parade makes its way through the streets of Manchester.
The victory parade broadcast will be the culmination of more than 700 hours of critically-acclaimed coverage of the Paralympic Games on Channel 4 – which was watched by nearly half of the UK population – with the share of the 16-34 year old audience exceeding that of the London 2012 Games on several days.
Channel 4's Commissioning Editor for Sport Stephen Lyle said: "We are excited to be covering this celebration live from Manchester, giving everyone the opportunity to join the crowds in cheering on our heroic Olympians and Superhuman Paralympians. With Jon Snow and our Rio presenters reliving an extraordinary Paralympic Games it’s sure to be two hours of feel-good TV."
Sunset + Vine will be producing the coverage with David Tippett as the executive producer and Cerith Williams directing.
