Channel 4 News sweeps Online Media Awards

Channel 4 News scooped five awards at this year’s Online Media Awards including the Grand Prix prize for Website of the Year.

The programme also picked up awards for Outstanding Digital Team of the Year, Best Use of Social Media, Best Site for News-Led Journalism, while presenter Jon Snow won Best Twitter Feed.

Last night Snow tweeted from Tehran where he is covering Iran’s presidential election. In typical typo-laden fashion, @JonSnowC4 tweeted: “I value this more than I can say..I can honetly say that my life online has totally ignited my life as a jouranlist..”

“I'm honoured and daunted by winning #onlinemediawards twitter award: irony in a week when I am in Iran where Twitter so interupted....”

Channel 4 News editor, Ben de Pear, said: "This is a magnificent achievement for the online team that have been so ably and imaginatively led by Anna Doble and have worked tirelessly to deliver such fantastic stuff. Receiving five awards is unprecedented, but the awards for best website and in particular best digital team were really special.

“Online have won nearly every award going this year for a whole plethora of projects - but No Go Britain really stood out. Everyone at Channel 4 News is rightly proud of a project that is fundamentally changing the transport infrastructure in some of Britain's biggest transport hubs."

Online Media Awards winners were announced yesterday at a ceremony at the Emirates Stadium in central London and recognise ‘the best and boldest of online news-based creativity.’

Anna Doble, Head of Online, said: "I am thrilled because this was about the team being recognised - beyond all expectations. I am so proud of everyone who has helped bring such winning ways to the website, from correspondents to producers, tweeters to camera operators.

"To scoop best digital team, best news-led site and the grand prix award for best overall website was truly off the scale. And Jon Snow winning best Twitter feed was the icing on a very special cake!"

On Tuesday, Channel 4 News also won two Amnesty International Awards in the Television News category for Burma’s Forgotten People and a Digital Innovation award for No Go Britain - an investigation into transport for the disabled.
