Michael Fassbender in Shame.

Channel 4 and Film4 were awash with champagne and cheering and complete strangers randomly hugging each other today, as the Golden Globe nominations were announced. But that's what life is like in the aftermath of the Channel 4 Christmas party.

Fortunately, there was much to celebrate, as Channel 4 enjoyed a (industry technical jargon alert) massive shedload of nominations for its US shows.

Closer to home, there was also hugely exciting news for Film4, securing nominations in both the best actor and best actress in a motion picture drama category. The nominations are a great fillip for the British film industry, with recognition for plucky Brit Michael Fassbender (born Heidelberg to Irish-German parents) and everyone's favourite cockney, Meryl Streep.
