In her new Channel 4 documentary series, The Greatest Shows on Earth (starts tonight at 10pm), Daisy Donovan is getting to grips with some of the most popular television shows in the world to find out what makes some very different cultures tick.
From Egypt’s love of seeing celebrities kidnapped at gunpoint to India’s dancing obsession Daisy sees how different societies – and particularly the roles of women - are brought into sharp relief by their TV.
But she gets a little too close for comfort in Brazil, going behind the scenes on the country’s most revealing talent show, Miss Bum Bum, where young women go cheek-to-cheek to decide who has the best backside.
“It felt a bit pervy and seedy, but everyone Brazilian didn't bat an eyelid, so I clearly just needed to accustom myself,” says Daisy.
She meets a photographer who takes up skirt shots of the contestants for his blog and gets an eyeful sitting next to some of the contestants. “I’d like to have a cup of cocoa and go to bed. I’ve just seen an extreme waxing. This is not a good place for me, because I stare anyway and now this is just too much,” says Daisy.
