Embarrassing Fat Bodies

Category: News Release

Embarrassing Fat Bodies, Mondays from 6th June 2011, 8pm, Channel 4

Channel 4's hit medical series just got a lot bigger. Embarrassing Bodies is back for a four part series with Drs Christian, Dawn and Pixie lifting the underbelly of fat as the UK tips the scales with an incredible 27.5 million people now overweight or obese.

The doctors will be welcoming the dangerously obese into their clinic and helping with the embarrassing problems caused by their weight, from erectile dysfunction and massive hernias right through to sagging skin and hidden genitals left behind once the weight has been shed.

Whilst diet and exercise is always the preferred solution, for some patients their weight is out of control and operations and medication are the only solution, whilst others try hypnosis and counselling in a bid to help everyone take steps to improve their health.

Dr Pixie meets Lisa who, aged 29, is obese thanks to her addiction to food. She is a compulsive eater desperate for help to control her overeating. She's embarrassed to let her husband see her naked, and fears she will pass on her habits to her children.

Pixie knows the problem stems from Lisa's mentality towards food, so to curb her eating she sends her for sessions of hypnotherapy, and consultations with a dietician and personal trainer. How well will she fare in a month? Lisa returns later in the programme to reveal all.

Next up is 19 year old Malissa. She hit the headlines in 2008 for being the UKs most obese teenager, weighing 34 stone aged 16, and then became the first teen in the world to undergo a life saving gastric band operation. In the two years following her life saving op she lost a whopping 23 stone but is now left with ‘the body of a 90-year-old' thanks to masses of excess skin.

She meets Dr Christian for a consultation for surgery to remove her excess skin. But on the day of the operation her dream is scuppered as surgeons reveal they cannot operate on her - and it's all because she hasn't given up smoking and is anaemic because of an insufficient amount of iron in her diet.   So rather than loose the excess skin Malissa is advised to concentrate on getting healthy first.

Meanwhile Dr Dawn see's Yolanda, a 37-year-old housewife and carer who has a hugely protruding stomach thanks to multiple hernias and being overweight. But the size of the hernias mean she cannot exercise in order to lose weight, so caught in the vicious circle her only answer is surgery. She is referred to a specialist for Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy where 85% of her stomach is removed through keyhole surgery.

Also in the programme Dr Christian helps Tony, a man who lost 11 stone but has been left with a buried penis and erectile dysfunction because of his excess skin on his stomach. He hasn't had sex for twenty years because of his weight problems and is referred for an apronectomy to get him back in the sack.

Lastly the Baker family continue busting fat myths as they find out if a ‘slow metabolism' really does exist.

First into the clinic are two ladies struggling to cope with the embarrassing effects weight loss has had on their bodies. Having shed over eight stone in six years, as well as having three caesareans, 33-year-old Lynsey has been left with a large overhang of skin on her stomach and bulge of fat in her pubic area which has made sexual intercourse embarrassing for her.

While 46-year-old Julia's staggering fourteen stone weight-loss has left her with so much sagging skin that she is even more ashamed of her body now than when she was at her largest. Can ‘hypnoband' therapy for Lynsey and skin-removal surgery for Julia put them on the road to improved self-confidence?

Also seeking help is Glenn, who comes to see Dr Christian desperate for help with his extreme oedema, which he has been suffering with for many years and which has left his stomach literally dragging on the floor.  After being put on a course of steroids following a severe asthma attack, Glenn put on twelve stone in nine months. Now left with a huge and unsightly overhang of skin, stretching from his waist to the floor, Dr Christian sends Glenn for special surgery to see if his huge swelling can be safely removed.

And as being overweight is a significant cause of Erectile Dysfunction, there's a trip to a sleep clinic for three overweight men.  While they sleep their penises will be measured for nocturnal activity. A healthy man should have a number of erections while he is asleep.   As Dr Christian explains if this isn't happening - it's a sign that a man's arteries are start to clog up with fat and could be an early warning sign of heart disease.

Meanwhile, the mobile clinic will be in Derby - one of the UK's fattest cities - where the doctors will be giving out fat-free advice to the locals, including the Baker family who, with a combined load of over 56 stone are each classed as obese. Throughout this series, Dr Dawn and the Bakers will be testing the popular theories behind obesity. This week, we see if genes play a part in determining weight gain.

Episode 2

TX: Monday 13th June, 8pm, Channel 4

This second programme sees a husband and wife with a combined weight of 52 stone, and a 21-year-old Mum whose life is unbalanced by her enormous breasts.

In this episode we meet 16-stone Elaine, who comes to see Dr Pixie with a number of uncomfortable weight-related problems down below. As a consequence of child birth and obesity, Elaine now suffers from a prolapsed vagina and bladder incontinence. Unable to have intercourse or exercise without embarrassment, Elaine is desperate to get these issues sorted so she can start trying to lose the weight.

Also in to see Dr Pixie is 22-year-old Serena, whose extremely large J-cup breasts are a literal pain in the neck. Along with the constant unwanted attention, the blisters and smelly rashes caused by their size are ruining Serena's life. Similarly struggling with chaffing due to sagging skin is Glenn, who visits Dr Dawn at his wits end. Despite successfully losing over 20 stone, Glenn now suffers profuse sweating because of his excess skin, having to shower up to five times a day to mask the smell.

With an estimated 1.2million people in the UK so fat that their lives are in danger, the Embarrassing Bodies doctors will look into cases where surgery is literally a matter of life or death. In this episode, Dr Christian meets husband and wife Stewart and Christine, who with a combined weight of 52 stone, are both facing early graves if their unhealthy eating-habits aren't curtailed.

In the mobile clinic, Dr Pixie performs cardiac risk checks on the Derby locals, while Dr Christian tests a group of office workers to examine the dangers of hidden fat. And continuing her mission of testing popular theories as to why we are prone to gain weight, Dr Dawn and the obese Baker family undergo a Dexascan X-Ray to see if heavy bones are the reason for their sizes.
