Five million watch The Snowman and The Snowdog on Xmas Eve

An average audience of 4.9 million viewers watched last night's The Snowman and The Snowdog on Channel 4 - the sequel to Christmas classic The Snowman.  The new animation peaked with 5.8 million viewers.

It is the highest rating Channel 4 programme to be broadcast on Christmas Eve in over ten years and the channel's fourth highest rating programme of 2012.

The original version of the classic Raymond Briggs Christmas story The Snowman also performed well on Channel 4 this year. On Sunday 23rd December between 18.25 - 18.55 it drew an audience of 2.2m, 9.6% share of audience and peaked with 2.8m viewers.

The film is broadcast every Christmas on Channel 4 and Sunday's broadcast was the highest overnight performance the film has achieved in 13 years (1999, 2.6m).
