MARCELLA

Marcella is spiritedly crashing her way through life, assisted by her dubious life-coach, best friends and ever-patient driving instructor. Bouncing back from a seismic break-up, clinging on to her dreams of becoming an actress, and - when she remembers her lessons - finally learning to drive, Marcella is on a mission to change her future for the better whilst navigating your thirties under-prepared - but somehow always staying afloat. 

 

JON

Jon is a calm, patient, pragmatic driving instructor who despite her constant lateness and terrible driving enjoys Marcella’s company and finds her entirely intriguing. On the surface Jon might seem straight-laced, serious and awkward but he is also kind, warm, quirky and funny and throughout the series he and Marcella become closer.

 

CAROLINE

Marcella’s flat mate, Cal is her oldest and dearest friend. She tells it like it is and knows Marcella almost better than Marcella knows herself. Intelligent, supportive and happy to laugh at how ridiculous life is, she is Marcella’s sounding board and most valued confidante. Alongside Lucy she helped Marcella over the last year, post her break up with Simon.

 

LUCY

Lucy is one of Marcella’s oldest and best friends and lives with her and Caroline. A yoga instructor with a sense of fun (and dubious taste in snacks) she has a complicated history with Marcella’s brother Billy.

 

BILLY

Marcella’s little brother Billy seems to get away with everything and is the apple of his mum’s eye, despite having recently come out of rehab for drug addiction. Marcella loves him and really just wants to see him right, even though he constantly struggles to stay on the straight and narrow. He’s well-meaning but his selfishness drives his sister up the wall.

 

SIMON

Marcella’s ex-boyfriend Simon, after a year of her getting over him, is coming back in to her life when he returns to London unexpectedly - with his new wife in tow. Emotionally vulnerable though he seeks out Marcella’s company and despite her best attempts to ignore him Simon slowly makes his way back into her life.

 

MUM

Marcella’s mum desperately wants her to be happy and successful in life, and despite being preoccupied by her cats, she spends a lot of time worrying about whether Marcella has brushed her hair or not.

 

DAD

A foul-mouthed, hot-tempered, eccentric but charming Irishman, Marcella’s dad is a force to be reckoned with.
