It's no April fool: Derek's back!

Category: News Release

The award-winning comedy drama Derek returns to Channel 4 on 23rd April 2014 for a brand new 6x30 series. A year has gone by since we last visited Broad Hill Retirement Home and there’s some new residents, additions to the staff and the welcome return of a few familiar faces.

Derek first landed on our screens in January 2013 and introduced the character of Derek Noakes - a sincere, sweet natured individual who loves animals and has a heart of gold. Series 2, also written, starring and directed by Gervais, will see the reprise of top-notch performances from the likes of Kerry Godliman (Hannah) Karl Pilington (Dougie) and David Earl (Kev).

Not only are the old gang back, but there’s some new elderly tenants who’ve since joined the home. Derek's dad moves in, but far from being the sweet old man, he's got whisky in his back pocket and too much lead in his front one. Wayward youth Vicky is now working there full-time and providing the residents with ‘free’ slippers - no questions asked. Kevin is still drunk. Dougie is still grumpy. Hannah is still the salt of the earth. And Derek is still spreading kindness wherever he goes.

Produced by Derek Productions Ltd for Channel 4, Derek series 1 was Channel 4's highest rating scripted comedy in nearly two years achieving a consolidated audience of 3.2m.  Series 2 is commissioned by Commissioning Editor of Channel 4 Comedy, Fiona McDermott.

Phil Clarke, Head Of Channel 4 Comedy, said "Derek is irreverently funny, but it’s world is one of compassion, friendship, and joy in the everyday, and we’re so pleased to welcome it back onto Channel 4."

Ricky Gervais said "I was blown away by the affection from around the world for the first series, particularly the emotional connection it seemed to make with people. I hope they like the second offering as much."
