When the only thing standing between you and success is you, the stakes are high and first impressions are vital. In this intimate and upbeat new series, we are allowed in as an eclectic group of real job seekers from across the country interview for real roles at some of Britain’s biggest and best-known brands. Sought after jobs at the likes of Virgin Trains, Hilton Hotels and Resorts, Aston Martin, and Champneys are all up for grabs.

The first to share their secrets of how they select the perfect person for a role are formidable recruitment duo Diego and Kathryn from Virgin Trains. They’re looking for someone to bring sparkle to the role of serving drinks and snacks on their west coast line. Hoping to impress and win the £24k per year role is 29-year-old Bianca, who with mounting student debt has been forced to put her studies on hold. Amongst the candidates who’ve made the shortlist, she faces stiff competition from 37-year-old Jagat who has been unemployed for several years, but is hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps and carve out a career on the railway.

Meanwhile, at British cosmetics brand Ciaté London, founder Charlotte and marketing director Caroline are looking for someone to boost online promotion of their range of lipsticks, eye makeup and nail care. In the frame for the role, which would see the successful candidate earning between £20 and £25k per year is Mieke, who at just 26 holds three university degrees, but still can’t secure a job.  Along with the other candidates keen to secure the role, she is competing with 21-year-old selfie obsessed Soleil, a fitness and lifestyle blogger hungry to take her first step onto the career ladder.

Tonight’s first job is a £25,000-£40,000 per annum position as a product developer at “Sausage World”, the Yorkshire headquarters of Heck Foods.  It’s a battle between youth and experience.  Desperate to land the job is 55-year-old Stuart who has a background in takeaway pizza “dip pots” and scotch eggs.  He faces stiff competition from 26-year-old restaurant manager and enthusiastic foodie Calum.   As the interview builds to its climax, the two men go head-to-head in a blind sausage tasting.  Only one can emerge victorious and claim a berth in “Sausage World”.

Also tonight, luxury spa Champneys.  They’re looking for a receptionist to bring an air of calm efficiency to their flagship resort in Tring, Hertfordshire.  Amongst the candidates aiming to make a big impression on the Champneys bosses are 24-year-old Suzan, whose blue hair and facial piercings go hand in hand with a strong determination to carve out a successful career in business; and make-up loving admin assistant Zahra (26), whose moving story of how she emigrated to Britain in search of a better life quickly seizes hold of the interviewers’ emotions.

All companies featured in The Job Interview oversaw their own recruitment processes and drew up a shortlist of candidates to interview. In every case, the decision about who to employ was theirs and theirs alone.
