The £1 Houses: Britain's Cheapest Street returns to Channel 4
Category: News ReleaseChannel 4 has today announced the return of the hit RTS award-winning observational documentary series, The £1 Houses: Britain’s Cheapest Street.
The first three-part series, which aired in February 2018 to an average audience of 2.3m, followed the attempts of a group of local Liverpool families, couples and singles who were given a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy a house for just £1. The houses were derelict and needed complete renovation. Working with the local council who run the scheme, we saw major redesign missions undertaken as the plucky new homeowners attempted to create their dream properties in a rundown area of Liverpool.
The £1 Houses: Britain’s Cheapest Street (7 x 30’) is now returning as a series of half-hours, in a docusoap format. It will expand on the lives of the homeowners we met in the first series including young post grad Victoria, childhood sweethearts Mel & Rob and young mum Ibby as they come to terms with the reality of life in a long-neglected neighbourhood. We’ll also meet new £1 House owners for whom the hard work is just beginning. The new series is less about council fights and more about the growing community who are working hard to achieve their £1 House dream.
The series will see the highs and lows of everyday life, the impact on the wider community whilst continuing to follow the drastic renovations. But with life savings gambled on achieving first steps on the property ladder and the Wavertree area still a target for crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour, will this scheme to transform these neglected streets ever succeed?
The £1 Houses: Britain’s Cheapest Street Series 2 (7 x 30’) was commissioned by Gilly Greenslade, Commissioning Editor for Factual Entertainment at Channel 4. It is a Topical Television production and the Executive Producer is Claire Masters.
