No other animation producer had such a long and successful track record as John Coates, whose studio TV Cartoons was one of the world's best known animation studios. TV Cartoons launched in 1957 to make animated commercials and went on to produce The Beatles TV series and the Yellow Submarine movie during the 1960s. The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends, The Wind in the Willows, and The Willows in Winter followed, along with many other award winning and Oscar® nominated films and TV specials such as The Snowman, Father Christmas, The Bear, When The Wind Blows and Famous Fred.
The Snowman and The Snowdog is dedicated to John Coates 1927 -2012.
Producer - Camilla Deakin
After a career in journalism, Camilla joined Channel 4's Arts & Music department in 1999 and shortly after was promoted to become the Commissioning Editor for Animation. Camilla Deakin left Channel 4 in 2002 to set up her own animation production company Lupus Films with colleague Ruth Fielding. Camilla has Produced and Directed both animation and live-action films for the BBC, Channel 4, Five and ITV, as well as Executive Producing a number of short films for Channel 4 and the UK Film Council. Her most recent production is pre-school TV series The Hive, which is showing on Disney Junior channels in over 150 territories worldwide and is due to launch in the US from October 2012. She is currently producing the eagerly awaited sequel to Briggs' The Snowman, called The Snowman and The Snowdog.
Producer - Ruth Fielding
After gaining a Masters degree from RADA and Kings College, Ruth started her career theatre directing on the London and Edinburgh Fringe. She then joined Channel 4's Animation department and was soon promoted to Assistant Editor, Animation & Arts where she remained for 5 years, until leaving to set up Lupus Films. Among the more recent productions Ruth has Produced and Executive Produced are a 52 part animation series The Pinky & Perky Show for the BBC, as well as 78 part animation series The Hive, which is consistently the No.1 rating show on the Disney Junior Channel in the UK. In addition to producing a pilot for a pre-school animation series Toot the Tiny Tugboat, Ruth is also in charge of commissioning and acquiring 30 short animated films a year for Channel 4's Random Acts strand. Ruth currently manages the in-house animation team of 50 crew members as a Producer on The Snowman and The Snowdog.
Director - Hilary Audus
Hilary started with TV Cartoons in 1967 as an assistant animator on the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine. She stayed with the company on and off as both staff member and freelancer until 2001, working on such prestigious projects as The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends, The Wind in the Willows, and The Willows in Winter (winner of two Prime Time Emmy awards). Hilary was responsible for developing the animatic for the original Snowman and went on to storyboard and animate on the Oscar® nominated film. She has worked on other Raymond Briggs classics such as Father Christmas, The Bear (nominated for a BAFTA) and Ivor the Invisible, and more recently directed Pumpkin Moon for Sky1 and the Horrid Henry series for ITV.
Art Director - Joanna Harrison
Joanna studied graphic design at St Martin's School of Art and Goldsmiths. Her animated film Make Up was accepted for competition at Annecy Film Festival and won Movie Maker Best Amateur Film for 1973. She joined TVC as assistant animator to George Dunning, renowned director of The Yellow Submarine. In 1982 she helped develop the book The Snowman by Raymond Briggs into an award winning animation. She created original storylines, storyboarded, animated and also worked as a background artist on the film. The Snowman won a BAFTA award and was nominated for an Oscar®. Although Joanna continues to work in animation she also writes and illustrates award winning children's picture books that have been published worldwide. These include Grizzly Dad, published by David Fickling, which was nominated for The Book Trust Awards and won a Parents' Choice Award in America and When Mum turned into a Monster published by Harper Collins, which remained in print for over fifteen years. Her latest book My Little Sister is being published in August 2012.
