Stand Up To Cancer raises over £8m
Category: News ReleaseStand Up To Cancer donation lines closed on 30 November with the final fundraising total for the campaign standing at a staggering £8m, making it the most successful charity fundraiser on UK commercial TV ever.
The campaign, a new fundraising collaboration between Cancer Research UK, Channel 4 and Stand Up to Cancer US, raises money to boost funds for collaborative cancer studies and trials to turn breakthroughs in the lab into breakthroughs in our hospitals. Stand Up To Cancer is a programme of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, which began in the USA in 2008 and has raised more than $260m for cancer research.
Friday 19 October saw stars from television, music and film come together to Stand Up To Cancer with an audience reach of 7.8m. The live fundraising event was hosted by Davina McCall, Alan Carr and Dr Christian Jessen and featured moving real life stories as well as appearances from celebrities including Samuel L Jackson, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Piven, Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole and Heidi Klum.
Cancer Research UK has now begun the process of assessing the research proposals received and the task of allocating the funds raised to new clinical trials.
