True Stories: Albino United tells the amazing story of a football team in Tanzania made up of albinos. A rag-tag group of young men, they have an ambition to prove to the country that they are able to take part in everyday society and, more importantly, play football.
Economic decline and poverty have resulted in an alarming upsurge in tribal witchcraft practices in some rural parts of Tanzania. In recent years many albinos have been murdered, some as young as six months old, while others have been attacked with machetes and had their limbs cut off. Their body parts are used by witchdoctors in potions and remedies said to bring wealth and success in business.
Albino United's journey will take them to the heart of the dangerous albino killing zones, playing in front of crowds that can be extremely hostile. But the team's progress may also mean getting to see the World Cup and even meeting Didier Drogba. Above all, for Albino United, this is an opportunity to communicate to huge crowds that attitudes towards people with albinism must change and the killings must stop.
Marc Hoeferlin, Juan Reina and Barney Broomfield are the filmmakers behind this extraordinary film which is produced by multi award-winner Nick Broomfield.
